ALL mods display 'can't find string' error.

I thought I was having problems with one mod, but I tried more, and they all do the same thing.

Have installed 2.5 according to the detailed instructions in it. Am using Gold SP 1 mods on a gold sp1 board.

But any time I try to install -any- mods, I get that blasted string match error.

I realize it is probably something dumb on my end, but I can't figure what!

(Yes, I did create a new folder, and add my chosen mods to it, then use that folder when I tried to install mods.)

Please, share wisdom! <ggg>

Only two things I could think to check:

A: Make sure the mods you are downloading are for Service Pack board versions.

B: Make sure you have the YaBB.pl from the SP version selected in BoardMod (if you're like me and have multiple versions installed to run tests, you may have different versions of YaBB running at once. Not usually the case, though).

I have double-checked that the mods are for sp1, and I only have the one, single copy of YaBB ... I'm too new to this to have several different versions floating around! <ggg>

I'm still wondering if it could have anything to do with all the files it tries to open having the little rectangles, instead of returns throughout them.

(I don't know, I am grasping at straws!)

Lol... yeah, the little rectangles are a big problem. Those are binary characters. The files should be 100% ASCII characters. Just try redownloaded the zip file and extracting again. If there happens to be an options to extract in binary/ASCII (dont know why there would be, but if there is), pick ASCII. Make sure you also upload everything except picture files in ASCII mode, too, when you are FTPing the files to your server.

Well, if they open in notepad, they have the rectangles. If I open them in Word Pad they come out perfect.

And my board runs correctly. There are no problems with the basic board, even after downloading and re-uploading.

But this time around, I downloaded a new copy of the spell checker mod (its the first one I want to get working on my system), kept hold of the instructions, tried to follow everything exactly, did all the edits manually, reupped everything, and still the exact same thing ... the check spelling button appears when you ar eposting, but if you click on it, a small error message reading something like script error appears in the status bar at the bottom of the page.

I'm beginning to wonder if maybe I need to download a whole new copy of YABB, learn what the important data files are, and replace everything else.

(I -hate- being new to things!!!)

Sorry for all the stuff ... I'm just trying to learn.

Those squares should not being showing up in notepad... and I wouldnt recommend using wordpad to edit perl files or mod files. Those binary characters will cause a mod not to find what it's looking for.

As for the spellcheck mod, couldnt tell you there.

OK, somehow those came up from -downloading- board files from the site. (Though they were uploaded as ASCII.)

I'm really starting to wonder how much luck I might have in replacing the whole board. Any idea where I might be able to find out which files hold profile, message, and other such data? I'll start with a brand new board, and see if I can get mods to work on that, but I really do need to make sure I know how to keep everybody's data!

Again, I'm sorry, but I am trying to learn.

Just replace the files in the Source directory and YaBB.pl. Replace your english.lng file and your Settings.pl file if they have the binary characters in them, too (but remember to put the correct info into your Settings.pl file before reuploading).

Those are the only files you need to replace. Dont touch the boards, messages, variables, or data folders. Those hold the actual data for the board. The Sources directory is where all the programming lies.

And here's where my progress lies, so far ...

I'm spending enough time on this board that I've registered  Shocked Cheesy Grin

With a brand new YaBB download (which I'll only transfer the files you mentioned ) some of the mods will install, and others won't.

The spelling one is one that won't, but I have sent an IM to it's creator to see if he recognizes the problem.

And I thank you -very- much for your assistance! I hate being the new guy, but at least there are people willing to share knowledge to help the new guy fit in!

All of us were new guys once. =) You should've seen some of my original posts back at the yabbhelpcenter.f2s.com community (and if you remember THAT place, with Wyman and Kevin Large, then you are definitely YaBB old school. Tim C was there, too, just to give credit. I bugged him more than anybody at first. Wink)

Yeah, I know. I actually saw the updated template, because if you went to the site and put a page that didnt exist in, their custom 404 had links to the new sections. I just liked going back and reading my old posts. Talk about the ultimate newb. Wink

OK, hopefully y'all are still reading this topic, so I don't have to ask this in a new message.

Have to move my board to a new server, anyway, so downloaded brand new and installed several mods I wanted.

Have uploaded everything, set the right CHMOD numbers, and all of that.

Now, what do I need to download from the old server, and replace on the new to keep my users, messages, and the like.

Am I correct in assuming everything in Boards, Members, and Messages, and part of what is in Variables? (None of the mods put anything in Boards, Members or Messages, but some did put things in variables.)

Please share wisdom, here!
