Great mod!  But, Java is unfortunately pretty intensive on the client and can require quite a bit of overhead with the server, too.  I've been using Ajax Chat from blueimp for a while, and I like it quite a lot - it's AJAX-based so the overhead is relatively low, and the load on the client is minimal.  It also supports logging of chats, which can be useful.

Ajax Chat can also be used as a shoutbox, which is something that YaBB doesn't have but could certainly use!

I'd love to help you come up with an Ajax Chat mod similar to this one, which could be offered alongside or replace it entirely... let me know.

Actually, if you check the boards, YaBB has a Shoutbox mod available for both 2.3 and 2.4.
