I don't remember if I had posted 3DXL here or not before.  I did a quick search and found nothing so I figured no hurt in posting it. Smiley

http://www.3dxl.com/

Some people don't like the color but I designed the current layout almost a year ago using the colors of the previous layout as a base so I didn't have to figure them out myself.  I'm no good with colors. Cheesy

I've tried to integrate the forums into the site as best I could.  This is the reason for a slightly slow load time on the main page as there is quite a bit to load.

The host has also been problematic from time to time.  It's far from perfect as if you are using dialup and/or have a slow connection the host may cancel  any perl requests due to what it sees as a timeout.

But if you have goo internet you should be fine.  We are/will be looking for a new host when the time is right.  At least that was the plan at one point.

Anyway, stop by and take a look.

It's cool with the green colors, I also like the right side forum info on the main page, I surely will visit again as the contents were interesting for me but I got so little time, I think I'll become a member soon.

...but i don't like the forum links and login/IM together, they should be separated, also it's confusing with the forums link on 2 differnt places with different looks.

otherwise form that..

Good Work !

What exactly do you mean?

Not that I'm actually goign to change it but what do you my by login/IM together?

Also, how do you find a 2 links to the forums (yabb menu, and site menu) confusing?

about the 2 links, it felt like they were linked to different pages, the one at the left to a page containing info or links to other forums and the one link at the yabb menu to your forums but thats just a very tiny thing that I thought were unnecessary, you don't need the forums link in the yabb menu since you always have the forums link at the left or maybe rename it to home or forum home...

about the Login underneath the yabbmenu it is up to you but I think that I should probably put a border around the login fields or maybe move it or maybe an extra line break as I think that the login / yabbmenu is a bit to much melted together.

just my little thoughts, other than that tiny little things, everything looks great.

Looks nice once it finally loads Grin
I like the frontpage but in all honesty the frontpage took almost 20 seconds to load up on a 4 Mbit DSL connection Grin

Thanks.

It takes you 20 seconds? Wow! Shocked

The host and server are located in Europe and I'm in Canada on 5Mbit Cable it only takes me 4 or 5 seconds.  It was recently upgraded from 2Mbit and even then it didn't take that long.

I have to admit I'm shocked about that.  Does it still take 20 seconds each time you go there?

The thing mainly taking so long to load on the front page is the Recent Posts.  I've done what can to speed it up but the only way to get it loading any faster is to change hosts.

Thanks for the reply.

Yep scrolling is a problem for people using a resolution less than 1024x768.

Also if someone posts an image that is greater in width than 600.  This can be controlled by setting image dimensions though.

I designed that layout under ths assumption that most visitors were using a resolution of 1024x768 or higher.  For the most part they all are.  There are the fuew who still use800x600 though. Sad

I love the layout. Grin Is it easy to do, I am looking to change my board to look a little like yours.

It does take a while to load up but very impressive.

Do you have any hints or tips

Cheers

Windy

Timed it on the main page which stays black for 17 seconds (this time on an 8mbit line).
Forum looks to be much faster so I think there is something huge in your front door that takes its good time to load (perhaps some flash thingy ?)

But.... it still is a site worth waiting for to load as it is nicely balanced in looks and layout Grin

The color scheme on your boards looks awesome.  I really like the way it looks.

I had the same problem as Ron.  It took quite a while for the front page to load on my DSL connection.

Thanks for the comments. Smiley

The layout was easy enough to do ones I got the basic format and number right for tables and images.  I do all my coding in notepad, whether html, javascript or perl.  I think it took me about 2 months to do that layout.  I dont' remember for sure though.

I agree the front page takes too long to load (4 - 5 seconds on 5Mbit cable for me after deleting cache).  There is no flash it's just having a hard time to load up the information from the forums on the right side of hte layout.  The main thing taking so long is the recent post list.

This problem is host based unforuntatly so theres nothing I can do other than removing it from the layout.  Which I'd rather not do. Cheesy
